Lindsay Park on Brink of Major Milestones
- Thursday, 06 March 2003 00:00
With Tony McEvoy racking up winners left, right and centre throughout South Australia and Victoria since August 1, the famous thoroughbred stables need just two winners over the long weekend to register winner number 200 for the season.
Two winners will also notch up winner number 3000 for Lindsay Park since the retirement of the champion trainer and Lindsay Park founder and visionary Colin (CS) Hayes.
CS retired in 1990 after a career which netted a staggering 5,333 win including the country's biggest races including the Melbourne Cup, Golden Slipper, Caulfield Cup and VRC and AJC Derby.
McEvoy has two runners at Moonee Valley tonight, with numerous runners at the Flemington and Morphettville meetings on both Saturday and Monday.
To the end of February, McEvoy's tally of winners is twelve higher than any previous trainer in the history of Lindsay Park to the same time during the season.
The stable is also hoping to add another Group One victory to their list of 191 winners at racing's elite level. North Boy, El Nino, Fields of Omagh and Baggage will be representing McEvoy in his quest for Group One winner number one at Flemington.

Morphettville's New Training Track Gets the Thumbs Up
- Thursday, 06 March 2003 00:00
The Proride surface, designed and installed by Proride Surfaces of Yarra Glen, Victoria, replaced the wood-fibre circuit. It comprises synthetic fibre, graded sand and a special wax binder. It is dust free and needs no watering.
David Balfour, who has more than 60 horses in his team, said the track was "absolutely fantastic".
"We worked horses on it for the first time this morning and it was terrific," Balfour, president of the SA Trainers' Association, said. "All the trainers seemed wrapped in how it performed and, speaking to the senior jockeys, they were all really happy with it as well. The horses had no problems on it at all."
The Proride surface is nine metres wide, 10cm deep and 2200m in circumference, with a straight of 350m. The corners are cambered at two per cent and the straights cambered at one per cent.
The cushioning effect of the surface absorbs most of the shock to horses legs, reducing stress and injury. Similar tracks are in use at Lindsay Park, Euroa, Macedon Lodge at Mount Macedon and Brandon Farms in South Australia.

McEvoy's Lincoln Cup Chance Likely to Miss Cut
- Wednesday, 05 March 2003 00:00
For connections of the Lindsay Park trained March in Style, a last start winner at Strathalbyn, it wasn't too much weight they were worried about, rather the lack of a handicap.
Thoroughbred Racing SA handicapper Andrew Macdonald has all but ended McEvoy's hopes of winning Eyre Peninsula's biggest race after giving March in Style the mininum weight of 52 kilograms.
Because of being on the minimum weight the four-year-old gelding looks almost assured of missing a start. Currently March in Style is 20th in the order of entry for a race in which only 14 horses will run. Four emergencies are provided at acceptance time.
McEvoy would no doubt love to win the Eyre Peninsula's biggest race the Port Lincoln Cup. McEvoy grew up on Eyre Peninsula around Streaky Bay, about 300 kilometres north west of the tuna capital of Australia toward Ceduna.
The Lincoln Cup is being head hunted by a few Adelaide trainers including Gary Kennewell, Byron Cozamanis, Richard Jolly and Gordon Richards.
Other trainers represented with entries include country training kings Mick Whittle and Trevor Trenowden and local mentors Noel Reidy, Ray Angelo, John Francis and Robert King.
Entries have been received for the big race from Morphettville, Angaston, Ceduna, Streaky Bay, Port Augusta, Normanville and Strathalbyn.
Exalted Lad Looking for Luck
- Thursday, 06 March 2003 00:00
The stable has endured a three-month run of city placings - 19 in total - but has been unable to cross the line in first place since Damn Straight saluted at Victoria Park in November.
Exalted Lad has been resonsible for some of those placings, including finishing runner-up in both the Listed C.S. Hayes Memorial Stakes behind Terminus Prince (pictured) and the Group 3 Tokyo City Cup behind Si Senor.
"Since Melbourne Cup day I've lost count of the number of city placings," Smith said. "It's been very frustrating. Tne horses are running well but we just seem to be finding trouble everywhere we go."
"Exalted Lad was wide for the trip last start and circled the entire field to be beaten a neck in a Group race last start. He's been knocking on the door at his last few but just needs a break to get back into the winners circle."
Exalted Lad has drawn wide at his last two start but hasn't fared any better on Saturday, drawing barrier eight in the 10-horse field. He will be ridden by leading South Australian apprentice Matthew Neilson.
Stablemate Brave Decision has drawn the rails for the race and is almost certain to lead the field - but not as he did last week when bolting well clear of the field mid-race.
"He's not an easy horse to ride and he was fired up," Smith said. "He took off on the apprentice and folded up in the straight. He's on his way to the Broken Hill Cup later this month and needs another run before heading up there."

Four From Five for McEvoy at Murray Bridge
- Wednesday, 05 March 2003 00:00
Today at the provinicial South Australian meeting at Murray Bridge the in form mentor won four races and was beaten a nose in the only other event the stable was represented.
With his quartet of winners at the Bridge today, McEvoy made it a dozen winners for the week throughout South Australia and Victoria.
Among his other winners in the past week have included the Flemington stakes winner Regrowth, impressive debut winner Baggage, well bred Cheltenham winners Zibellino and Dubai Ice and his Moonee Valley pairing of Exaggerate and Bagger Vance.
Today the stable cheered home Glenara, Interception, Slick Racer and Striking Plume as winners. The only race the stable didn't win in which it was represented was the two-year-old. In that particular race the well bred filly La Boisselle was beaten a nose.
Meanwhile, Racing Victoria today announced that McEvoy had reclaimed his place at the top of the Victorian monthly training table.
Results for the month of February were released this morning showing McEvoy prepared eleven winners for the month leaving him ahead of all the leading Melbourne stables.
Currently McEvoy leads both the Adelaide and Melbourne training premierships and he is on track to break the all time Lindsay Park record for the number of winners in a season.

Suzy's Unbeaten Adelaide Record on the Line
- Tuesday, 04 March 2003 00:00
The grey, prepared by Alan Bailey at Caulfield, has had two starts in Adelaide for two wins - in the Group 2 Swettenham Stud Stakes and the Listed City Of Marion Stakes - both last season.
The mare is resuming on Saturday but has a great record fresh and her record over the last 12 months is excellent . She was prepared for last year's Group 1 Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville in May but dodged the race due to rain, heading straight to Brisbane where she was luckless in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap behind Show A Heart and Falvelon.
After a short break she raced last spring but, after four uncharacteristic runs, returned to the paddock.
"As you know, she hates rain, so we decided to bypass the Adelaide carnival last year and head straight to Brisbane," Trevor Bailey said. "She ran some great races there and I've no doubt she would have won the Stradbroke had she gotten to the outside in the straight. She went to the paddock up there but her feet were cut back too much, and we struggled to get her right in the spring. Rather than press on, we pulled the pin and sent her out for another break."
According to Bailey, this will be Suzy Grey's last campaign before going to stud. He hopes to add to her record in the next few months, which will include campaigning in both Adelaide and Brisbane again.
"She is going as well as ever after a long break and she's primed to run a good race fresh," Bailey said. "All I can hope for is the weather to stay clear.
"After this she will be aimed at the Goodwood Handicap, before maybe another crack at the Stradbroke. This is definitely her last campaign so any black type we can pick up along the way will be a bonus."
Paul Gatt, who is unbeaten on the mare in Adelaide, will again ride this weekend.
